Opportunity for Olympia is an organization working to build a thriving Olympia with shared prosperity for all of us.

When we invest in higher education, we create a better-educated workforce, and can:

  • Attract more businesses
  • Create good-paying jobs
  • Ensure a legacy of opportunity for our entire community

The Opportunity for Olympia initiative will:

Increase opportunity for all

The Opportunity for Olympia initiative will provide at least one year free community college tuition – or that equivalent amount toward public, in-state university tuition – for all high school graduates and GED recipients in Olympia. Revenue will be raised through a 1.5% tax on household income in excess of $200,000.This tax applies to the wealthiest 3% of households in Olympia. It would raise millions of dollars to enable all high school graduates to attend higher education.

Improve our quality of life

Our quality of life in Olympia is outstanding – but that quality of life depends on local revenue – and we’ve left money on the table. We all have a shared responsibility to invest in our community. By ensuring those at the top pay their fair share, we can create a high quality of life for everyone in Olympia.

Address tax fairness

Washington’s tax system is one of the most regressive in the country. In our community, the lowest income families pay nearly 17% of their income for state and local taxes, while those in the top 1% pay only 2.4%.This initiative will help ensure everyone pays their fair share to create a thriving Olympia with equal opportunity for everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is impacted by this tax?

Households with income in excess of $200,000. That equals 3% of Olympia residents, about 750 households.

Can you give me an example?

Sure. If your income is $250,000, your tax will be 1.5% on $50,000. (The first $200,000 is excluded from taxation.) So you would contribute $750 in taxes.

How much money will this raise?

This measure would raise nearly $2.5 million each year.

Where is the money going?

The money raised will fund at least the first year of community college tuition – or the equivalent amount toward in-state public university tuition - for every public high school graduate and GED recipient in Olympia. 95% of the funds raised would go to program costs – not administration.

Why an income tax?

Washington’s tax system is the most regressive in our country. In our community, the lowest income families pay nearly 17% of their income for state and local taxes, while those in the top 1% pay only 2.4%. We’re leaving millions in much needed revenue on the table. This is our opportunity to address this issue in Olympia.
